Obama seeks to enhance gun background checks

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama is asking Congress to expand background checks on gun buyers to include private sales and is using his executive authority to increase the information available in data banks in the background check system. The White House calls background checks the most efficient and effective way to keep guns away from dangerous individuals.

Obama wants Congress to close loopholes that permit private gun transactions to occur without background checks. The White House says nearly 40 percent of gun sales are conducted by private individuals now exempt from checking the backgrounds of buyers.

Obama is also ordering federal agencies to make "relevant data" available to the federal background check system and to remove barriers that might prevent states from providing information, particularly mental health data, for background checks.

Study Says Tidal Energy Can Meet 20% of UK Electricity Needs

Tidal power is always pretty impressive to understand, given the sheer scale on which the power is generated. Imagine a wind turbine turned upside down and dunked in some of the roughest seas and you begin to imagine just how tricky but beneficial tidal power can be.

And according to new research UK officials are severely underestimating the wealth of electricity that could be generated from tidal sources.

The analysis, published in the journal Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society A, reports that estuary barges and tidal streams could provide more than 20% of the UK?s demand for electricity.

?From tidal barrages you can reasonably expect you can get 15% of UK electricity needs, that?s a very solid number,? co-author Dr Nicholas Yates from the National Oceanography Centre told BBC News.??On top of that there is a 5% tidal stream figure, and with future technological development that is likely to be an underestimate in my view.?

One such project that has been floated (get it? ?floated??) is the idea of building an estuary barge across the Severn. So far the idea has been rejected by the coalition government due to the impact it would have on the environment, however ministers have recently indicated they are wiling to review the idea.

However Dr Yates, one of the researchers behind the new report, has good reason to dislike starting out with building on the Severn.

?I think it?s unfortunate that attention for tidal range has tended to focus on the Severn, it?s the wrong place to start, it?s too big,? he said.??Start small, it?s what the Danes did with wind ? start small, learn quick and build up.?

Tidal power has the opportunity now to become a real player in the world of renewable energy. Already a company ? MeyGen, a company who are ?dedicated to the production of predictable, clean and renewable electricity from tidal flows? ? is planning on developing a tidal stream technology in the Pentland Firth that, initially, will provide enough power to service 38,000 homes.

?This is a crucial milestone for us, it will be the first array of tidal stream turbines,? observed report co-author Professor AbuBakr Bahaj from the University of Southampton.??It will be a viable proposition for us in energetic areas of the sea ? it will be give us another element in the energy mix that?s more reliable than wind.?

All in all, with slowdowns in the growth of solar and, to a lesser extent, wind power, and growing understanding in tidal power generation, 2013 could be the year that we see the industry leapfrog its way to the forefront of our minds.

(Reuters) - Here is a look at former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak, who was overthrown in February 2011 in a popular uprising:

Mubarak was thrust into office in October 1981 when Islamist radicals assassinated President Anwar Sadat at a military parade.

September 27, 2005 - Mubarak is sworn in for a fifth consecutive term after winning the first multi-candidate presidential vote on September 7. Parliament had voted in May 2005 to change the constitution to allow the first contested presidential elections. Rights groups said it was marred by abuses.

November 29, 2010 - A new parliamentary election virtually eliminates opposition to Mubarak's ruling party in the assembly before a 2011 presidential vote. The Muslim Brotherhood and other opposition groups boycott the parliamentary election.

January 25, 2011 - Anti-government protests erupt across Egypt, driven by discontent over poverty, repression and corruption.

January 28 - Mubarak orders troops and tanks into cities to quell demonstrations. Thousands cheer news of intervention by the army, which is widely seen as a neutral force in politics, unlike police who are regularly deployed to stifle dissent.

February 10 - Mubarak says national dialogue is under way, transfers powers to vice-president but refuses to leave office immediately. Protesters in Cairo's Tahrir Square are enraged.

February 11 - Mubarak steps down and a military council led by Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi takes over.

April 12 - Mubarak is hospitalized after being questioned by prosecutors. The next day, Egypt orders Mubarak detained for questioning on accusations he abused his power, embezzled funds and had protesters killed.

August 3 - Mubarak, wheeled into a courtroom cage on a bed to face trial, denies the charges against him. His two sons, Gamal and Alaa, also deny the charges. In subsequent sessions, Mubarak always appears on a hospital stretcher.

June 2, 2012 - Mubarak is sentenced to life in prison for his role in the killing of protesters and is flown from the Cairo court to Tora prison on the outskirts of the capital, where he is admitted to a hospital facility.

January 13, 2013 - A court orders a retrial of the former president, following an appeal over the killing of protesters.
