Yemen: US drone strike kills 5 militants

(AP) ? A U.S. drone strike Monday aiming for an al-Qaida leader has killed five militants in the country's south as part of a Yemeni offensive against the Islamist group, Yemeni officials said.

They said the airstrike targeted Qaid al-Dahab, a local leader of al-Qaida, in a convoy of three cars near the town of Radda, 160 kilometers (100 miles) south of the capital, Sanaa. Four militants were wounded. The officials said al-Dahab's fate was not yet known.

Al-Dahab's sister was the wife of Anwar al-Awlaki, the U.S.-born radical militant cleric killed by a U.S. drone strike last fall.

There was no immediate word from Washington on the strike that targeted al-Dahab.

On Sunday, U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta defended drone strikes in Yemen as a measure "to defend and protect the United States of America." He was interviewed by the American ABC TV network.

Al-Qaida's branch in Yemen, known as al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, is one of the movement's most dangerous offshoots. The U.S. considers the impoverished country as a key battleground in the war against al-Qaida.

The terror network has had a presence in Yemen for years, but expanded its influence during last year's political upheaval when millions of Yemenis rallied across the country demanding the ouster of their longtime ruler, Ali Abdullah Saleh. The militant group seized control of several towns in the south during the turmoil.

Earlier this year, al-Dahab's brother, Tariq, led militants who stormed and briefly occupied Radda, They pulled out after authorities released 15 of his men from jail. Tariq was later killed in a family feud.

Later Monday, Yemen officials said seven other al-Qaida militants were killed in southern Yemen, but they disagreed over how they died. Security officials said they were killed in an airstrike, but the military said they were hit by a missile fired from a ship off Yemen's shore. Local tribal officials said the seven militants were in two cars.

Yemen's army is pushing an offensive to uproot al-Qaida-linked militants from their strongholds in the south. The U.S. is aiding the operations. Panetta said its activities "don't necessarily involve boots on the ground," according to a transcript of the interview on the ABC website.

In their offensive, Yemeni government troops have retaken most of a southern provincial capital from al-Qaida fighters.

The officials said Monday that the army holds 90 percent of Zinjibar, the capital of Abyan province, which fell to al-Qaida last year. They say 48 hours of fierce fighting left 22 militants and nine soldiers dead.

They said the army was advancing toward Jaar, another town in militant hands for over a year, in a three-pronged attack supported by heavy artillery shelling and air raids.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity in line with military regulations.

Iran Hopes to Export Electricity to Cover for Reduced Oil Demand

?

European restrictions on Iranian oil go into force later this summer. Some U.S. allies in the European and Asian community have already started taking steps away from Iranian crude oil purchases in an effort to escape economic pressure from the West. Sanctions are meant to take oil revenue away from Tehran that its adversaries believe is financing a covert nuclear weapons program.

But while U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was praising New Delhi for its coordination with U.S. nuclear concerns, Indian delegates were in the other room landing trade deals with visiting Iranians. This suggests that despite Western pressure, there's still some interest in working in an Iranian economy.

A week after Clinton left, Tehran started announcing that it was keen to develop a self-sufficient power sector. The Iranian government said it already has electricity export contracts with its neighbours, including Turkey and Iraq, and was now looking further away to Lebanon and Syria. The Energy Ministry said its electricity exports were up more than 38 percent for the calendar year ending in March, so there was plenty to go around. Despite an eight-year military and reconstruction campaign in neighbouring Iraq, Tehran could claim, parts of Baghdad still don't have a reliable source of electricity so why not take advantage of the opportunity.

Further still come claims that Tehran has set aside roughly $650 million for renewable energy programs. This, the government said, would come from a slush fund set up by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad last year, when Iranian crude oil was still flowing freely, that designated 20 percent of the country's oil and gas revenue for such social investments. On top of that was the announcement that the private sector can now sell Iranian crude in an effort to escape sanctions pressure.

Kim to miss the rest of regular PGA Tour season

CLEVELAND (AP) ? Anthony Kim will miss the rest of the FedEx Cup season to treat chronic tendinitis in his left arm.

Kim has made only two cuts this year and has withdrawn from his last three tournaments. Along with nagging pain in his left forearm, Kim hurt his right elbow when his club struck a rock while he was trying to hit out of a bush at the Texas Open.

He decided to take time off after seeing the same Cleveland doctor who operated on his left thumb two years ago.

Kim says he's been trying to revive his game and has been held back by injuries. Treatment is expected to last four to five months. That gives Kim hope of returning after the Ryder Cup for the Fall Series.

Roach rocks England to give Windies hope

Kemar Roach stunned England with a dramatic late burst to give West Indies hope of an improbable victory in the first Test at Lord's on Sunday.

Roach took two wickets for seven runs in eight balls, including England captain, and first innings century-maker, Andrew Strauss, to leave the hosts 10 for two at the close of the fourth day.

England will need a further 181 runs to reach their seemingly modest victory target of 191 on Monday's final day in the first of this three-Test series.

That West Indies - who started the day 35 runs adrift and in danger of an innings defeat -- were still in the game owed much to Shivnarine Chanderpaul's second marathon effort of the match.

Chanderpaul, officially the world's best batsman, made 91 in a total of 345 that followed his first innings 87 not out.

The Guyana left-hander batted for 10 hours and 24 minutes in this match, scoring 178 runs for once out while facing 425 balls -- a mammoth effort even by the 37-year-old's high standards.

Nevertheless, with the Lord's pitch holding up well, England will still be regarded as favourites for victory.

But if the tourists maintain their accuracy, and overhead conditions assist swing bowling, the West Indies -- who came into this match having won just two of their previous 30 Tests -- could yet claim a stunning success.

Roach had Strauss, who made 122 in the first innings, caught in the gully for just one and nightwatchman James Anderson caught behind for six.

After Anderson exited, Roach's next ball rapped Jonathan Trott on the pads and the tourists appealed for lbw, only for Aleem Dar to rule not out.

The West Indies reviewed the decision but as replays showed the ball only just clipping the stumps, the Pakistani umpire's original verdict was upheld.

Trott was nought not out at stumps, as was opener Alastair Cook.

Chanderpaul, downplaying his own effort, said he was looking forward to some final day fireworks from Roach and new-ball partner Fidel Edwards.

"Kemar stepped it up this evening and we're hoping Fidel can step it up also," Chanderpaul told Sky Sports.

"It's not bad (the West Indies' position). Hopefully they can put it in the right areas and get the wickets. It's pretty tough out there."

England's Graeme Swann insisted Roach's late double strike hadn't caused too many jitters in the home dressing room.

"To walk away at the end chasing 191...we'll take that," he said. "We'd have taken a chase of less than 200 and we deserved a chase of less than 200.

"It wasn't great losing the captain tonight but we have a very strong line-up."

Off-spinner Swann, who grabbed the key wicket of Chanderpaul when he had him lbw on the sweep, said of West Indies' star batsman: "Once again he's proving a thorn in our side. With such a crabby, unorthodox technique you think he must get out sometime but he keeps going.

"It's always annoying when you can't get a bloke out, but you can't take anything away from him," added Swann, who took three for 59.

Chanderpaul and Marlon Samuels he shared a fifth wicket stand of 157 that rescued the West Indies from the depths of 65 for four.

The 31-year-old Samuels was closing in on what would have been only his third Test hundred when, shortly after England had taken the new ball, he played a flat-footed drive off Stuart Broad and edged straight to Swann at second slip.

Samuels faced 172 balls with 12 fours in an elegant and gutsy innings of 86.

Broad, who took a Test-best seven for 72 in West Indies' first innings, followed up with four for 93 for a match haul of 11 for 165.

That meant the fast-medium bowler had become the first player to take 10 or more wickets in a Lord's Test since South Africa's Makhaya Ntini in 2003 and the first Englishman since Ian Botham took 11 for 140 against New Zealand in 1978.

Lennon's killer transferred to another NY prison

(AP) ? John Lennon's killer has been transferred to another maximum-security state prison in western New York after spending more than 30 years in Attica Correctional Facility.

The Buffalo News reports (http://bit.ly/MhSqLT ) that 57-year-old Mark David Chapman was transferred Tuesday from Attica to the nearby Wende (WEHN'-dee) Correctional Facility in Alden, 20 miles east of Buffalo.

A spokesman for the state prison system says the agency doesn't disclose why inmates are transferred to a new facility.

Chapman fatally shot Lennon in December 1980 outside the Manhattan apartment building where the former Beatle lived. Chapman pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced in 1981 to 20 years to life in prison.

He was denied parole for the sixth time in September 2010. He's eligible again for parole in August.

Under New JOBS Act, More IPO Prospects Consider Filing Confidentially

ipoSolarCity, the cleantech company backed by Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, filed for an IPO this past week. But there's hardly been a peep about it compared to most offerings. That's because under the recently passed JOBS Act, SolarCity didn't have to publicly share anything about its financial performance when it filed. This is unlike LinkedIn and Pandora, which had to publicly release three years of data in filings that were more than 150 pages long. In SolarCity's case, the company merely put out a two-paragraph statement saying that it had confidentially filed with the SEC and planned to have an IPO. This is the new world under the JOBS Act, which was hastily passed last month.
