Efudex and My Skin Cancer Journal: Differences Between Basel ...

Skin carcinoma occurs in the outer layer of the skin and is considered as the most common type of skin cancer, with Basel cell Carcinoma as its most common form. It involves the development of a benign tumor that may?appear?on a localized area of the skin. Melanoma is the?malignant?form of skin cancer involving the pigment producing cells in the skin. Its the most dangerous and can spread to other organs in the body. Carcinoma on the skin appears as a small shiny nodule on areas?exposed?to sunlight, usually on the neck, arms, face, head, and hands. It may appear as raw dry skin . Spreading to other parts of the body is rare but the most common form of skin cancer. Melanoma usually grows with the?appearance?of a small pigmented skin and likely to occur on a pre-existing pigmented area on the skin. It can appear from flat and irregular brown or black spots to a raised area of dark colors. It can come and go and appear to get well, then bleed, ooze, or grow.Melanoma takes the more progressive type and can spread to other parts of the body.?

My last biopsy was Basel cell Carcinoma. The two?surgery's?on my?forehead?were?Melanoma? enclosed in their sack form. The one on top of my head was also Basel Cell?Melanoma?for which I had a sweep of the top of my head 2?centimeters?deep and skin?grafts.?

I was left? today with an Anonymous comment on this blog which read:?

?At least 2 times you refer to "Basal Cell Melanoma". I am under the impression that Basal Cell and Melanoma are two different a things. I'm not sure it's accurate the call it "Basal Cell Melanoma". Thanks for your time to share your experience.

I am not an expert on Cancer, nor a medical professional, and do not claim to be. ?I do know that I have spent way to many painful times in the doctors office and many dollars. I have been told way to many times that I will fight skin cancer the rest of my life. I do not blog my personal journey on treatments to mislead anyone seeking information on their own?medical?experiences. I blog?about my ??experiences?to help me deal with the mental stress and thoughts that any cancer can play on ones mind.

Lets face it.....CANCER IS CANCER, no matter if it is Carcinoma or Melanoma.

I hope I answered Anonymous's answer.

The London Souls, Hollerado, Wake Up Lucid at The Satellite on 01/17/2013 09:00 PM PST

The London Souls are thrilled to announce the release of their new album ?Here Come The Girls? on January 8th. The follow up to their acclaimed self-titled debut that caught the attention of Rolling Stone, MTV, USA Today and Q104.3 for its raw live feel and which The Wall Street Journal praised for its ?authority and intuition,? ?Here Come The Girls? is the next step for a creative songwriting duo who is meticulous about the sound of rock n roll.

Following the recording of ?Here Come The Girls? in early 2012 at The Bunker Studio in Brooklyn, lead singer / guitarist / songwriter Tash Neal was a victim of a serious hit and run accident when his NYC cab was struck by a BMW drag racing down Broadway. When he arrived at the hospital - unresponsive and near death - doctors immediately performed brain surgery to treat a subdural hematoma. After a medically induced coma and several surgeries, Tash?s progress has been nothing short of a miracle. Tash is now back rehearsing with the band and ready for the release of ?Here Come The Girls!?

?Here Come The Girls? reflects the inspired decisions of Tash and drummer / songwriter / singer Chris St. Hilaire made in taking the album in a new direction. By keeping the arrangements simultaneously loose and assured their soulful vocals became the perfect vehicle for this new collection of songs.

From the driving guitars, drums and harmonies on ?City Of Light,? to the pop craftsmanship of ?Bobby James,? the intimate ?Isabel? and the swing of ?Valerie,? ?Here Come The Girls? sees The London Souls meld a hybrid of styles and showcase a myriad of tones to create a classic record with timeless appeal.

Captivating concertgoers with an awe-inspiring live show, The London Souls have shared the stage with The Roots, The Black Crowes and Big Boi (Outkast), along with selling out national venues like The Bowery Ballroom in NYC. The band has also made fans with stage-stealing performances at SXSW, Mountain Jam and Telluride Blues & Brews. The band?s music has also been heard on VH1, HBO, and CBS.

An intensely loveable quartet and one of Canada?s fastest rising talents, Hollerado have earned their stripes playing with The Dead Weather, Weezer, Fucked Up, Black Lips, Titus Andronicus, and others.

?A terrific 35-minute set, somehow fusing gospel harmony vocals and Neil Young-like electric guitar to a punk-rock kick. Their music was both compact and expansive, abrasive, yet cheerful.? ? Boston Herald

?Well-honed and energetic, the band recalled the bulk of melodic '90s rock.? ? SF Weekly

?The YouTube buzz band Hollerado blows it up, too, with tunes amusing ("Fake Drugs") and poignant ("Juliette").? ? Philadelphia Inquirer

Wake Up Lucid doesn't make nice. Not musically, anyway. The band of cousins ? Ryan, Ian and Jamie Baca ? mete out scuzzy blues you imagine sprung from gear that barely works, seething with emotion and crackling with defiance toward those who would water down rock 'n' roll for the digital age. After thundering onto the scene with the EPs "Look Alive People" and "Sugar," the Bacas found an ally in producer Joe Cardamone (the Icarus Line), who worked with them on their debut full-length (due in August). The album is titled, fittingly, "Feel It," and the title track implores you to do just that: Feel it, 'cause it's going to hurt a little. ? Kevin Bronson (Buzzbands.la)

Preterm infants who grow more slowly as they approached what would have been their due dates also have slower development in an area of the brain called the cerebral cortex, report Canadian researchers in a new study published today in Science Translational Medicine.

The cerebral cortex is a two to four millimetre layer of cells that envelopes the top part of the brain and is involved in cognitive, behavioural, and motor processes.

Researchers analyzed MRI brain scans of 95 preterm infants born eight to 16 weeks too early at BC Women's Hospital & Health Centre between 2006 and 2009. Infants were scanned soon after birth and a second time close to what would have been their due date, the ninth month of pregnancy. These MRI scans allowed researchers to measure the pattern of water movement inside the brain, which normally changes between scans as the brain matures. The researchers also assessed the babies' weight, length, and head size. They found that preterm infants with slower growth had delayed development in the cerebral cortex compared to those infants who grew more quickly between scans.

"These results are an exciting first step because understanding the importance of growth in relation to the brain in these small babies may eventually lead to new discoveries that will help us optimize their brain development," says Dr. Steven Miller, the study's co-lead. Dr. Miller is head of neurology at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), the Bloorview Children's Hospital Chair in Paediatric Neuroscience, professor in the department of Paediatrics at the University of Toronto, affiliate professor in the department of Pediatrics at the University of British Columbia (UBC), and affiliate investigator at the Child & Family Research Institute (CFRI) at BC Children's Hospital. He led the study with Dr. Ruth Grunau, a professor in the UBC Department of Pediatrics and CFRI senior scientist.

"More research needs to be done to understand what is the optimal growth rate for the brain development of these babies," says Jillian Vinall, the study's first author and a UBC PhD student co-supervised by Dr. Grunau and Dr. Miller.

"We're especially grateful to the families for their generous and ongoing participation in this study," says Dr. Miller. The researchers are following the babies through childhood to understand how preterm brain development is associated with their neurodevelopment outcomes.

Obama seeks to enhance gun background checks

(AP) ? President Barack Obama is asking Congress to expand background checks on gun buyers to include private sales and is using his executive authority to increase the information available in data banks in the background check system. The White House calls background checks the most efficient and effective way to keep guns away from dangerous individuals.

Obama wants Congress to close loopholes that permit private gun transactions to occur without background checks. The White House says nearly 40 percent of gun sales are conducted by private individuals now exempt from checking the backgrounds of buyers.

Obama is also ordering federal agencies to make "relevant data" available to the federal background check system and to remove barriers that might prevent states from providing information, particularly mental health data, for background checks.

Filing A Claim With The Insurance Company Does Not Have To Be ...

No one likes having to choose a an automotive plan. Car insurance is a pretty simple product, but it does have a lot of different features, and a little bit of learning can help you understand how to line these features up to get the best coverage at the cheapest price. The tips in this article will give you the insight you need to purchase the right policy.

When a family member who was listed on your auto insurance shifts to a policy of their own, you need to take them off of your policy immediately to get your premiums down. For instance, if your child who has always been covered under your policy buys his or her own policy, lower your premium by having that child removed from your policy. The number of drivers covered under the policy is a factor in the determination of premiums, so having fewer drivers covered can lower your premium.

Insurance companies are not all created equal. If you do not like the quote you got from one insurer, shop around. All insurance companies vary in their pricing.

Understand the coverages on your auto insurance policy to make sure you are adequately covered for any unforeseen events. There are a few standard items that auto insurance policies cover, such as personal injury and hospital stays. Coverages such as comprehensive or collision may not be included on your insurance policy, unless you ask for them. It is vital that you have enough coverage for your vehicle and any damages that might occur.

Carpooling or taking public transit can save you money on your auto insurance. If you prove that you are a low risk, then your provider will respond by offering you a low premium. Tell your agent about your efforts to reduce mileage, and there?s sure to be a discount that applies to you.

Some coverage items are not worth the extra cash though. By way of illustration, those with old cars of minimal value may consider dropping collision coverage from their policy. This move may save you a significant amount every month. Liability coverage has a required minimum, but if you previously had a high amount, you may want to lower it somewhat.

When you are dealing with infractions on your record that affect the rates you are being offered for car insurance, explore options for receiving a better quote. For instance, if you get a ticket or have an accident that results in a rate increase, you might be able to get it reversed if you complete a defensive driving course. There are a few companies, including Progressive, that can fit your car with a chip. If the company likes how you drive, they will lower your premiums.

A good way to save a significant amount of money on your car insurance is to install a security device like a car alarm, satellite tracker or an immobilizer. Theft prevention on your car will make a big difference in your premium. The more precautions that are in place to protect your car from being stolen, the more favorable your insurance premiums will be.

Try not to leap at the lowest policy quote you receive. It?s possible that it is a great deal, or the price may speak for itself. Investigation of the insurance policy and what terms and conditions their insurance contains is vital before you sign up. You don?t want to find out the hard way that you are not actually covered in the event of an accident.

Most insurance providers give discounts to people whose yearly mileage is under 7500. This makes cutting back on your driving a great option for anyone who wants to save money on car insurance.

Car insurance is a bit more complex than many people believe. Use a little dose of common sense and some research, and you will find the car insurance to fit your needs. If you follow the tips above, you can choose a better insurance policy.

Study Says Tidal Energy Can Meet 20% of UK Electricity Needs

Tidal power is always pretty impressive to understand, given the sheer scale on which the power is generated. Imagine a wind turbine turned upside down and dunked in some of the roughest seas and you begin to imagine just how tricky but beneficial tidal power can be.

And according to new research UK officials are severely underestimating the wealth of electricity that could be generated from tidal sources.

The analysis, published in the journal Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society A, reports that estuary barges and tidal streams could provide more than 20% of the UK?s demand for electricity.

?From tidal barrages you can reasonably expect you can get 15% of UK electricity needs, that?s a very solid number,? co-author Dr Nicholas Yates from the National Oceanography Centre told BBC News.??On top of that there is a 5% tidal stream figure, and with future technological development that is likely to be an underestimate in my view.?

One such project that has been floated (get it? ?floated??) is the idea of building an estuary barge across the Severn. So far the idea has been rejected by the coalition government due to the impact it would have on the environment, however ministers have recently indicated they are wiling to review the idea.

However Dr Yates, one of the researchers behind the new report, has good reason to dislike starting out with building on the Severn.

?I think it?s unfortunate that attention for tidal range has tended to focus on the Severn, it?s the wrong place to start, it?s too big,? he said.??Start small, it?s what the Danes did with wind ? start small, learn quick and build up.?

Tidal power has the opportunity now to become a real player in the world of renewable energy. Already a company ? MeyGen, a company who are ?dedicated to the production of predictable, clean and renewable electricity from tidal flows? ? is planning on developing a tidal stream technology in the Pentland Firth that, initially, will provide enough power to service 38,000 homes.

?This is a crucial milestone for us, it will be the first array of tidal stream turbines,? observed report co-author Professor AbuBakr Bahaj from the University of Southampton.??It will be a viable proposition for us in energetic areas of the sea ? it will be give us another element in the energy mix that?s more reliable than wind.?

All in all, with slowdowns in the growth of solar and, to a lesser extent, wind power, and growing understanding in tidal power generation, 2013 could be the year that we see the industry leapfrog its way to the forefront of our minds.

Canon Debuts ?Experience Centre? Physical Showroom In Canada, Includes 500px Partnership

canon-canada-storeCanon today officially launched a new initiative including a pilot location in Calgary, Alberta, Canada that follows the experience of physical retail projects like Apple Stores and Microsoft's recent brick-and-mortar locations, giving consumers opportunities for hands-on experiences in a space not shared with other brands. Canon's new "Image Square" isn't a store per se, but it is a showroom and learning center that sounds like it borrows a lot from the Apple model.

Timeline: Egypt's Mubarak - from presidency to prison

(Reuters) - Here is a look at former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak, who was overthrown in February 2011 in a popular uprising:

Mubarak was thrust into office in October 1981 when Islamist radicals assassinated President Anwar Sadat at a military parade.

September 27, 2005 - Mubarak is sworn in for a fifth consecutive term after winning the first multi-candidate presidential vote on September 7. Parliament had voted in May 2005 to change the constitution to allow the first contested presidential elections. Rights groups said it was marred by abuses.

November 29, 2010 - A new parliamentary election virtually eliminates opposition to Mubarak's ruling party in the assembly before a 2011 presidential vote. The Muslim Brotherhood and other opposition groups boycott the parliamentary election.

January 25, 2011 - Anti-government protests erupt across Egypt, driven by discontent over poverty, repression and corruption.

January 28 - Mubarak orders troops and tanks into cities to quell demonstrations. Thousands cheer news of intervention by the army, which is widely seen as a neutral force in politics, unlike police who are regularly deployed to stifle dissent.

February 10 - Mubarak says national dialogue is under way, transfers powers to vice-president but refuses to leave office immediately. Protesters in Cairo's Tahrir Square are enraged.

February 11 - Mubarak steps down and a military council led by Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi takes over.

April 12 - Mubarak is hospitalized after being questioned by prosecutors. The next day, Egypt orders Mubarak detained for questioning on accusations he abused his power, embezzled funds and had protesters killed.

August 3 - Mubarak, wheeled into a courtroom cage on a bed to face trial, denies the charges against him. His two sons, Gamal and Alaa, also deny the charges. In subsequent sessions, Mubarak always appears on a hospital stretcher.

June 2, 2012 - Mubarak is sentenced to life in prison for his role in the killing of protesters and is flown from the Cairo court to Tora prison on the outskirts of the capital, where he is admitted to a hospital facility.

January 13, 2013 - A court orders a retrial of the former president, following an appeal over the killing of protesters.

NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) ? Newtown residents are divided on what to do with the school building where 26 people were killed, with some favoring demolition and construction of a memorial and others encouraging renovations.

Many passionately gave their opinions at an emotional public meeting Sunday about the fate of Sandy Hook Elementary.

"I have two children who had everything taken from them," said Audrey Bart, whose children attend the school but weren't injured in the shooting. "The Sandy Hook Elementary School is their school. It is not the world's school. It is not Newtown's school. We cannot pretend it never happened, but I am not prepared to ask my children to run and hide. You can't take away their school."

But fellow Sandy Hook parent Stephanie Carson said she can't imagine ever sending her son back to the building.

"I know there are children who were there who want to go back," Carson said. "But the reality is, I've been to the new school where the kids are now, and we have to be so careful just walking through the halls. They are still so scared."

The meeting at Newtown High School drew about 200 people. A second meeting is set for Friday. Town officials also are planning private meetings with the victims' families to get their input.

Police say Adam Lanza, 20, killed 20 first-graders and six adults in the Dec. 14 massacre at Sandy Hook. They say he killed his mother at the home they shared in Newtown before opening fire with a semiautomatic rifle at the school and killing himself as police arrived.

Although opinions were mixed at the Sunday meeting, most agreed that the Sandy Hook children and teachers should stay together. They've been moved to a school building about seven miles away in a neighboring town that has been renamed Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Mergim Bajraliu, a senior at Newtown High School, attended Sandy Hook, and his sister is a fourth-grader there. He said the school should stay as it is, and a memorial for the victims should be built there.

"We have our best childhood memories at Sandy Hook Elementary School, and I don't believe that one psychopath ? who I refuse to name ? should get away with taking away any more than he did on Dec 14," he said.

Last week, residents around town expressed similar opinions about the school's future.

"I'm very torn," said Laurie Badick, of Newtown, whose children attended the school several years ago. "Sandy Hook school meant the world to us before this happened. ... I have my memories in my brain and in my heart, so the actual building, I think the victims need to decide what to do with that."

Susan Gibney, who lives in Sandy Hook, said she purposely doesn't drive by the school because it's too disturbing. She has three children in high school, but they didn't attend Sandy Hook Elementary School. She believes the building should be torn down.

"I wouldn't want to have to send my kids back to that school," said Gibney, 50. "I just don't see how the kids could get over what happened there."

Fran Bresson, a retired police officer who attended Sandy Hook Elementary School in the 1950s, wants the school to reopen, but he thinks the hallways and classrooms where staff and students were killed should be demolished.

"To tear it down completely would be like saying to evil, 'You've won,'" the 63-year-old Southbury resident said.

Residents of towns where mass shootings occurred have grappled with the same dilemma. Some have renovated, some have demolished.

Columbine High School, where two student gunmen killed 12 schoolmates and a teacher, reopened several months afterward. Crews removed the library, where most of the victims died, and replaced it with an atrium.

On an island in Norway where 69 people ? more than half of them teenagers attending summer camp ? were killed by a gunman in 2011, extensive remodeling is planned. The main building, a cafeteria where 13 of the victims died, will be torn down.

Virginia Tech converted a classroom building where a student gunman killed 30 people in 2007 into a peace studies and violence prevention center.

An Amish community in Pennsylvania tore down the West Nickel Mines Amish School and built a new school a few hundred yards away after a gunman killed five girls there in 2006.

Newtown First Selectwoman E. Patricia Llodra said that in addition to the community meetings, the town is planning private gatherings with the victims' families to talk about the school's future. She said the aim is to finalize a plan by March.

"I think we have to start that conversation now," Llodra said. "It will take many, many months to do any kind of school project. We have very big decisions ahead of us. The goal is to bring our students home as soon as we can."

How Newsweek made its first moving cover art

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Newsweek's provocative print covers of yesteryear may be gone from newsstands, but the now all-digital magazine is tinkering with ways to attract potential subscribers.

The newsweekly released its first moving-image cover art - an eight-second video of a submersible descending into Hawaii's sapphire waters - which it tweeted Friday morning as a .gif.

"This is something that we can do now without the boundaries of print," Andrew Kirk, a spokesman for Newsweek and the Daily Beast, told TheWrap.

Newsweek hired photographer Hugh Gentry to shoot images of Pisces IV, one of the world's deepest-diving submarines, as reporter Tony Dokoupil dove down with marine explorer Sylvia Earle.

His cover story documents how, in the age of unmanned robotic subs, funds for human oceanic expeditions have begun to dry up.

" took it at 125 feet," Kirk said, adding that the photographer used a Canon 5D Mark II camera. "He went down to do the piece, which is about reduced government funding for oceanic exploration."

He said design director Sean Noyce used photographs to create a still-image cover, brandished with the headline: "Have We Hit Bottom?" Modeled after the octogenarian publication's defunct print design, the cover fades onto an iPad screen just as the video reel of the sub ends.

Newsweek suffered a round of layoffs last month as the magazine downsized after terminating its print edition. The final issue, emblazoned with the hashtag #LastPrintIssue, hit newsstands on December 24.

Still, Kirk said the newsweekly's trimmed down staff is getting along with its reduced budget.

"We have a great in-house team that are able to work with the resources that we have," he said. "We're putting together a very interesting portfolio issue every week with a nimble team."

Demon MailDefender blocking Amazon, WeTransfer, etc? ? Demon ...

Our Demon migration in November was been a nightmare. Not helped by Demon losing service at the same time making us think we'd configured it wrong. However, now I find that lots of emails are getting lost.

In the last two months I've made at least half a dozen purchases from Amazon. As everyone knows, they're great at their automated emails, excessive even. But I've had none. (Almost causing a huge upset over a declined card for a Christmas present!)

We also sell through Amazon Marketplace. Every time a customer places an order, we get a confirmation email. We've had about 30 orders - luckily we access them online - but no confirmation emails.

WeTransfer.com is a well-known large file sending service, a rival to YouSendIt.? We use it regularly. Three times people have sent me large files using the service - but each time I've not had the email link.

An important supplier to our company send their VAT invoices by their automated system.? We've placed three orders with them - I get their delivery updates but never the VAT invoice, which I've had to request separately each time.

What other emails am I not getting?

So I went into the Demon Email Management Portal to see if I could look at the spam filter settings.?
Here's the setting: "DEMON MAIL DEFENDER IS ACTIVE".
And it's 'mandatory'.
And there's no spam box or anything.
No control over anything in the useless 'dashboard'.
No links to anywhere; no options, no nothing.
Demon's much-trumpeted business scale anti-spam service.

What kind of 'executive' makes a decision to implement an anti-spam service on all an ISP's customers, leaving them with no option and no recourse to check whether it's actually working ok?? Giving it 'free' - but it's crap; worse than no filtering as we had before.? And really; is there anyone using the internet who hasn't heard of Amazon?

There is NO foolproof spam filter.? Which is why sensible (and mostly free) services such as Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail and Plusnet put the spam they've filtered into a Spambox. Then if you're missing something you can look in there. And if something's wrongly in there, you can flag it as 'good'. Familiar to all? I wonder if Mr. Mail Defender has heard of this brainwave solution?

(Did I read somewhere that Mail Defender said it was 97% accurate? If so, that's a rubbish figure. If I get 100 emails a day, I want to see all of them, not lose 3 a day.)

Anybody any ideas?? I don't see anyone else has this problem (but - would they know about it?) - and reading the other posts I doubt if Demon will respond before a few days have passed.

Everything We Know About the Hero Teachers from the California Shooting

LONDON (Reuters) - The first official portrait of Britain's Duchess of Cambridge, popularly known by her former name Kate Middleton, was unveiled in London on Friday, and opinion was sharply divided over an image many deemed unflattering. The 31-year-old, who as a glamorous future queen is one of the world's most photographed women, is portrayed in the large canvas with a faint smile, long, copper-tinted hair and shadow under her eyes. ...
