Manning not guilty of most serious charge

Army Pfc. Bradley Manning has been acquitted of aiding the enemy when he shared classified documents on U.S. military actions in Iraq and Afghanistan with WikiLeaks, but he was convicted of lesser charges, including espionage.

Military Judge Col. Denise Lind issued her verdict early Tuesday afternoon. She found Manning guilty of five espionage counts, five theft charges, a computer fraud charge and other military infractions. The aiding the enemy charge was the most severe and carried the possibility of life in prison.

Manning, though, isn't likely to avoid prison time. His sentence hearing will begin Wednesday, and the charges he was convicted of could mean 128 years behind bars, according to the Associated Press.

Shortly after the verdict, WikiLeaks, the website that served as the conduit for the release of the classified information, described the espionage convictions as "dangerous national security extremism from the Obama administration," reported the Associated Press.

Throughout the court martial proceedings, Manning's defense attorney argued that Manning's actions were well-intentioned and that he was acting as a whistle-blower ? a role that's become as vital as a free media, said Richard Reeves, a lecturer at the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism.

"Whistle-blowers are a threat to power, and power is protecting itself," he told Yahoo News. "Military security, military necessity, national security ? those words carry great weight and they're trying to chill [whistle-blowing] and, in large measure, they're successful in that."

From the Pentagon Papers to Julian Assange at WikiLeaks, whistle-blowing is a way to protect free societies, Reeves said.

After the Manning verdict, social media lit up with news of the decision. Here is a sampling:

Prior to the verdict, dozens of Manning's supporters gathered outside Fort Meade, Md. Some of them wore "truth'' T-shirts and waved signs in support of Manning, reported the Arabic news site Al-Jazeera.?

Manning, 25, of Crescent, Okla., admitted to sending more than 470,000 battlefield reports from Afghanistan and Iraq, 250,000 State Department diplomatic cables and other documents to WikiLeaks, an international website notorious for publishing state secrets.

The website?s organizers also have offered support for Edward Snowden, the National Security Agency contractor who shared classified documents that exposed the United States? collection of millions of cellular phone call records and other intelligence activities.

Manning?s supporters and defense team argue that he did not directly hand over documents to al-Qaida and other enemies of the nation. Manning says he sent the information to expose war crimes and deceit.

Air Force Reserve Lt. Col. David J.R. Frakt, a visiting professor of law at the University of Pittsburgh, told the Associated Press that a conviction on the most serious charge would have created "a new way of aiding the enemy in a very indirect fashion, even an unintended fashion."

During the court martial hearing, prosecutors painted Manning as a traitor and said Al-Qaida leaders, including Osama bin Laden before he was killed in 2011, were able to view the documents WikiLeaks published.

Krueger: Debt ceiling breach like 'Sharknado'

Outgoing White House Council of Economic Advisers Chairman Alan Krueger has added a new worst case scenario to the list of what could happen later this year if Congress fails to raise the debt limit: sharks falling from the sky.

On Monday, Krueger reiterated the White House position that President Barack Obama will not negotiate over raising the borrowing limit and that failure to do so will hurt the economy and, in particular, the middle class.

Krueger: Obama 'really consistent' on economic policy

The idea of breaching the borrowing cap was ?unthinkable,? Krueger said, and he drew comparisons to the recent Syfy movie ?Sharknado? in which a freak storm leads to thousands of sharks terrorizing people on land and in the water.

(PHOTOS: Playbook Lunch with Alan Krueger)

?You have this tornado which brings sharks and they land on people?s heads,? he joked at POLITICO?s Playbook Lunch event. ?I think if we cross the debt limit, it would be worse for the financial sector.?

House Republicans and the White House are preparing for another battle later this year over raising the government?s borrowing limit with the GOP pushing for deficit reduction measures to be included in any deal. The administration has said it will not negotiate over the debt ceiling and Kruger declined to map out how the administration would pressure House Republicans to act as well as how a government shutdown can be avoided when the fiscal year ends on Sept. 30.

?What the administration wants is what?s in the interest of the middle class,? Krueger said.

The Treasury Department has said that the country will likely reach its borrowing cap after Labor Day but has not provided a specific date. The administration has repeatedly urged lawmakers to avoid waiting until the last minute to take action.

Krueger did not elaborate on when the government may reach its debt limit beyond what the Treasury has previously said, noting that an exact date is difficult to pinpoint.

The 52-year-old economist is preparing to leave the White House this week to return to teaching at Princeton University. Obama has nominated Jason Furman, currently the principal deputy director of the National Economic Council, to replace Krueger.

During an hour long interview looking back on his time at the White House and on the economic challenges that lay ahead, Krueger said Obama has not given up on reaching a so-called ?grand bargain? debt and deficit deal with congressional Republicans.

?The president?s last offer to Speaker [John] Boehner is still on the table,? he said. ?I think he had a very sensible balanced compromise on the table.?

Krueger also noted that a compromise deal may have to be reached in a piecemeal fashion and that the deficit has been dropping in recent months so there should be more room for the government to renew efforts to help the sluggish economy.

The president has recently embarked on a series of speeches that focus on the economy and the middle class with the next one scheduled for Tuesday at an Amazon fulfillment center in Chattanooga, Tenn. The speeches so far have emphasized past proposals and Obama?s argument for why more needs to be done to help the middle class.

Krueger declined to say whether Obama?s Tuesday speech would contain new proposals.

?The president?s been really consistent,? he said. ?I think what you?ll see is the president emphasizing the steps Congress could take today to help strengthen the middle class.?

Another item item on this week?s economic agenda is the Friday release of the monthly jobs report, which is closely monitored as an indicator of economic strength. Krueger said at the POLITICO event on Monday that a lot of people ? including the media ? tend to ?make too much out of the monthly numbers,? and that he tries to look at the longer term, 12-month trend.

He also acknowledged that he has put out a similarly worded statement about a healing economy every month during his tenure as chairman of the CEA.

?Sometimes I get criticized for being lazy and not updating that statement, but my view is that when that stops being true, I?ll change it,? he said.

Jessica Ennis-Hill to decide on World Championships after London Anniversary Games

By Laura Williamson

|

Jessica Ennis-Hill?s chances of making the World Championships hang on whether she comes through Saturday?s tests in the 100 metre hurdles and long jump at the Olympic Stadium.

The Olympic heptathlon champion has only competed in two low-key events since winning gold 12 months ago and is battling a painful left achilles injury with the World Championships less than three weeks away.

Ennis-Hill will take a painkiller to race at the Sainsbury?s Anniversary Games this weekend and then assess how her ankle recovers before making a decision about going to Moscow on ?Monday or Tuesday? next week.

Star turnout: Mo Farah and Jessica Ennis-Hill will compete at the Olympic Stadium

Star turnout: Mo Farah and Jessica Ennis-Hill will compete at the Olympic Stadium

She said: 'I think it?s going to be a good test, to do the hurdles and then go to the long jump after. That?s trying to simulate what I?m going to do in Moscow; to see how (my achilles) holds up.

?This is the next big test. Obviously the hurdles is more explosive and coming down on my lead leg is obviously the damaged achilles, so it?ll be a good test and it?ll be good to see how it recovers.

?I?ve still got pain and it?s just managing it. I?m happy with the way it?s going but it?s still painful. There?s not much time left before Moscow and it?s not just one event; it?s handling seven events.

?I don?t want to leave it to the last minute. I want to start getting my mind in the zone to prepare for the World Championships.

Ready to compete: Jessica Ennis-Hill will feature at the London Anniversary Games

Ready to compete: Jessica Ennis-Hill will feature at the London Anniversary Games

?The last time I hurdled was in the Olympic Stadium (at London 2012). I had an amazing race and now I?m heading back into the stadium for my first hurdles race.

?I could not have been more ready last year and I think I?m at the opposite end of the spectrum this year. I?m just going to go out there and give it?my all and see what happens.?

Ennis-Hill also revealed she will have nowhere to train outdoors after September when Sheffield City Council shut down Don Valley Stadium. There are plans to redevelop the derelict Woodbourn Stadium in the city but nothing has been finalised, meaning Ennis-Hill will have to travel to Leeds or Loughborough twice a week.

?I train there every week and to think it won?t be there anymore is terrible for the city,? she said. ?It?s frustrating because obviously it?s going to make things more difficult, especially through the winter months. I do need a softer surface outside to avoid injuries. I haven?t thought too much into the winter months, but Woodbourn Road is just not ready yet.??

johndavies published Wind, 'Abundant free clean green energy'?

?In your dreams

?

1 - The subsidy and payment system for wind energy is about

to be changed?upwards !!

Junior Kayak Club. 6 evening sessions starting from Thursday 1st August 17.30 ? 20.30. Ages 8 - 16,no previous experience required. ?75 per person. Please call 01752 404567 or enquiries@mount-batten

Terms: standard MBC terms and conditions apply. voucher must be present at point of sale

Contact: 01752 404567

Valid until: Saturday, August 31 2013

?

The new Energy Bill proposes to replace the ROC system with

what amounts to a guaranteed price called a 'Strike Price'.

Upto 3x higher than the current wholesale price for

electricity, which is around ?47 per MWh.

The proposal is for

?100 per MWh for on land wind,

?125 per MWh for solar

?155 per MWh for offshore wind.

?

The cost to the consumer will be about ?4.3 billion in

2015/16,

Rising to ?7.6 billion in 2020/21. see- https://www.gov.uk/government/news/new-energy-infrastructure-investment-to-fuel-recovery

?

?

The prices have been set deliberately high to encourage

investors to build more wind farms, this could lead to the doubling of the

price paid to windfarmers, ('renewables' milked us of ? billions last yr; see

details on this site- http://www.variablepitch.co.uk/finance/

).

?

?

2 - After years of telling us that little or no backup was

required for 'renewables', the latest government wind scam, is that of using dirty

diesel as backup, with all the environmental & pollution implications.

A new industry has now developed, where an entrepreneur buys

large container based Gensets, puts them in a field, connect them to the grid &

picks up a fat cheque, just for being available?. & another if they

generate.

It is expected to cost us ?1?billion

a year by 2015, adding 5% to energy bills !!

There are advanced proposals to set up a system offering to pay

up to 12 x the current wholesale price

for electricity from standby generators owned by supermarkets, hospitals, data

centers, in fact anyone who has one.

This extra standby generation is required because of the intermittency

of wind & solar.

Read more here:- ?http://tinyurl.com/k2vvasm

?

Over the last month the average production from wind has

been less than 6 % of its stated capacity.

As I write this, the UKs 5,000 wind turbines are producing a

mere 1 % of demand, (sewage & landfill gas is giving 2x as much).

?

see- http://www.ukpowergeneration.info/site/realtime

So much for the 'abundant free clean green energy' we were promised !!

?

3 - Now is the perfect time to write to the Rt. Hon Michael

Fallon MP, the Energy Minister, about wind energy prices.

Further details + diy letter format here- http://tinyurl.com/nxjzzs6

?

Wind turbines-

Do they cost us money -YES

Are the subsidies a scam ? YES

Are they a good investment for the developer ? YES

Do they cut CO2 ? NO

Do they give reliable energy?

- NO

Do they give energy security - NO

Are they fit for purpose - NO

Should we build more ? NO

?

They are the wrong technology for the job, chosen by

ill-informed politicians, not by engineers.

?

PS; I'm not a NIMBY?

But, I am proud to be a NIABY

(not in anyone's backyard).

San Francisco Might Ban Planes With Ad Banners - Business Insider

banner plane message geicoSAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Planes with advertising banners may become a thing of the past in the sky above San Francisco.

San Francisco supervisors are mulling an ordinance that would ban aerial advertising above the city, despite the spotty success of such bans in other cities, the San Francisco Chronicle reported (http://bit.ly/15Cde7i). A Board of Supervisors committee is scheduled to take up the proposal Monday afternoon.

Honolulu has an aerial advertising ban that was upheld by a federal appeals court, but other cities that have pursued the restriction have run into trouble, according to the Chronicle.

San Francisco's proposal comes after years of complaints about noise from planes carrying advertising banners by residents, particularly those around the ballpark where the Giants play.

"It's like having a migraine headache that just pounds and pounds," Alice Rogers, a 20-year resident of South Park, told the Chronicle. "It's a little deeper than a buzz. You can hear it even when your windows are closed."

Legal experts say a ban might violate free speech rights. The Federal Aviation Administration may also object, as it did in the case of the California city of Manhattan Beach. The FAA said it plans to look at San Francisco's ordinance.

In a 2007 letter to Manhattan Beach officials, FAA Acting Regional Counsel Naomi Tsuda said local regulations on overflights that are more restrictive then federal law and are adopted because of noise concerns might be pre-empted as conflicting with federal law or an obstacle to the FAA's ability to effectively regulate navigable airspace.

The FAA also reportedly objected to Huntington Beach, Calif.'s ban on aerial advertising, the Chronicle said. The city repealed it in 2002 following court challenges, according to the newspaper.

San Francisco Supervisor Jane Kim pointed to Honolulu's success. An anti-abortion group that wanted to fly banners with pictures of aborted fetuses above Honolulu challenged the city's ban. The Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco, however, upheld it in a 2006 ruling.

The board's Land Use and Economic Development Committee, which will consider the full aerial ban on Monday, recommended last week that aerial advertising over the America's Cup race course be banned. Kim said she and Supervisor John Avalos wanted to make the ban permanent and apply to the entire city.

Robert Franklin, president of Livermore, Calif.-based aerial advertising company Aerial Services, said a full ban would be devastating to his business. He runs seven or eight flights a week in San Francisco, and his clients have included labor unions and election campaigns in addition to commercial ads.

"Aerial advertising is about the only affordable free speech in the country," Franklin said.

Christie and NVIDIA team up for an interactive car buying experience powered by augmented reality handson video

If committing the requisite funds for an Audi R8 coupe seems like a stressful ordeal, NVIDIA and Christie have created an augmented reality purchase experience to lend a hand with the selection process. Under the hood, the whole lot is powered by NVIDIA GPUs, Christie projectors and RTT DeltaGen software for car configuration. Using a 3D-printed, one-fifth scale model of the R8, a series of projectors and projection tiles utilize a 3D WARP mesh to outfit the car with paint, wheels and even headlamps. A tablet UI then allows the eager customer to toggle colors, rim options, side panels and turn the lights on and off. In addition to customizing the car itself, the system also shows how the R8 will look in different environments, from dusk by the water to the rural open road. Who could have thought one wee royal baby could attract so many 'oohs' and 'aahs'

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge display their newborn to the world outside St. Mary's hospital in London, and take questions from the world media.NBC News' Brian Williams reports.

By Chris Hampson, Director of International News, NBC News

LONDON ? It?s been a long wait.

Even longer than the nine months it usually takes to have a baby.

Longer still if you?ve been standing for the last two weeks ? with not much to say but a lot of airtime to fill ? outside the London hospital that?s become the center of the attention for the whole world, apparently.

Ever since Kate and William got together, we?ve all secretly been wondering when they?d get around to the important business of Doing Their Duty.

There may have been a little romance and a lot of love happening along the way, but let?s not kid ourselves about what?s going on here.

It is, of course, about the joy of starting a family.? But it?s also about making sure the monarchy keeps going. It?s about producing an heir to the throne.

JOHN STILLWELL/AFP/Getty Images

Prince William the Duke of Cambridge holds his new-born baby boy in front of the world's media outside the Lindo Wing of St Mary's Hospital in London on July 23, 2013.

It?s been a major concern throughout Great Britain?s rather bloody history.? Henry VIII ? he of the six wives ? was said to be consumed with the belief that it was his duty to produce a male heir to secure the future of the Tudor dynasty. It was third time lucky for the old philanderer, though even then it didn?t go to plan.

So with the very welcome arrival of Prince Whatsisname of Cambridge, the future of the House of Windsor seems secure. There?s granddad, dad and now junior all standing by (well, not baby, not yet) to become His Majesty the King ? the first time we?ve had so many in the dugout? for more than 100 years.

Nice work Kate.

As expected, for the most part Britons are ridiculously happy about the baby?s arrival.? Some are joyous because they love all things royal; some because they believe in the monarchy; and some because they just love babies and happy stories in the midst of all the misery that besets us these days.?

Prince Charles and Princess Diana brought one day old Prince William home from St. Mary's hospital June 22, 1982. NBC's Tom Brokaw and Rick Davis report.

There are others here who don?t care, and they are having a lean time of things right now because there is simply nowhere they can go to get away from the story.? It?s everywhere ? on every TV channel, in every paper, on every news website.? There is no hiding place for the curmudgeons.

The world, it seems, is captivated by this little nipper?s arrival. Not least (and this makes me happy as it helps pay the rent) our audience in the United States.

An American colleague told me this morning that her girlfriends had set up an email ?baby chain,? ?with everyone on it in a high state of excitement.? And, she said somewhat puzzled, ?they are normally so sensible!?

Well sense is out the window for now. As I write this I, a self-proclaimed royal doubter, am glued to my TV monitors. All four of them, all showing different channels, all pointing at the same door ? the exit to the Lindo Wing of St. Mary?s hospital, through which His Royal Diaper-Wearing Highness will emerge at any moment.

I suspect hundreds of thousands ? nay, millions ? around the world are doing the same thing. Who?d have thought one wee baby could attract so much attention.? This young chap surely gets into the Guinness Book of Records for causing the most ?Oohs? and ?Aahs? ever simultaneously-uttered across so many continents.

From restaurant decorations to dancing in the streets, check out how the world is celebrating the U.K.'s new royal heir.

Nice work, Prince Not-Yet-Named.

My excuse?? I recently acquired the noble status of grandfather to a rather lovely baby girl. Now every day, when not dealing with the murder and mayhem that characterize my job as director of international news for NBC, I find myself ?oohing? and ?aahing? at video of the precious child doing all sorts off mind-blowing and never-before-done things like rolling over on her side, and rolling back again.

And that first smile? Believe me, it?s priceless.

So, monarchists or not, the world has cause to celebrate the arrival of the young prince, and all young human-kind who add to the sum of our joys. It?s because of them that life goes on.

It?s not often we news journalists get the chance to spread a little sunshine in the world. So make the most of it. The rains will come soon enough.

Foul-smelling plant blooms near US Capitol

A titan arum, a huge plant native to Indonesia, went into full malodorous bloom on Sunday evening at the US Botanic Garden conservatory, drawing thousands of visitors seeking to inhale its putrid stench.

An enormous plant on Capitol Hill is in bloom, after vigorously emitting a putrid smell that many likened to that of a rotting corpse.

Kept at the United States Botanic Garden Conservatory, the titan arum is famous among botanists for having the largest unbranched inflorescense of any plant in the world, which one way of saying that it is the world's biggest flower (though technically it's made of several hundred flowers, like a daisy). In the wild, it can grow up to 12 feet tall.

But the plant, which is native to the steamy rain forests of Sumatra, Indonesia, is probably best known for the malodorous M.O. that it has evolved to attract pollinators.

"It was a little like when a trash truck passes you on a hot day," says?Laura Condeluci, the Botanic Garden's public programs coordinator, in a phone interview.?"It's definitely that rotting smell."

When titan arum blooms ? and it does so unpredictably, sometime waiting years or even decades to share its revolting stench with the world ? it uses the noxious fragrance to attract dung beetles and carrion-eating insects, which can then serve to spread the plant's pollen.?

The fetid odor is only one of titan arum's methods to draw bugs. The plant also generates heat; when blooming, parts of the plant warm to roughly human body temperature. The warmth not only helps the mephitic scent carry over larger distances, but it also helps fool any visitors into further believing that it is composed of recently deceased flesh.

"You look around and you think, where's the dead animal?" said?Bill McLaughlin, the Botanic Garden's plant curator.

'It comes to find you.'

This particular titan arum had never bloomed before. It had been living at a facility near the Botanic Gardens, when horticulturalists noticed that the plant was starting to flower. The putrescent plant was transported to a display area at the Botanic Garden Conservatory, where it grew from four to eight feet in just ten days.

Then, on Sunday evening, Mr.?McLaughlin saw that the plant's collar was loosening a bit. He climbed up a ladder and peered inside.

"I got the first little waft of odor and a little pulse of heat," he said. "It was quite a queasy odor."

PM Abe's bloc wins big in upper house vote, priorities in focus

By Linda Sieg

TOKYO (Reuters) - Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's ruling bloc won a decisive victory in an upper house election on Sunday, cementing his grip on power and setting the stage for Japan's first stable government since the charismatic Junichiro Koizumi left office in 2006.

The victory gives the hawkish leader a stronger mandate for his "Abenomics" recipe to revive the economy, but it also raises questions over whether he will shift his focus to his nationalist agenda, or be able to keep his party in line to push through structural reforms many say are vital for growth.

The win spells a personal political redemption for Abe, who led his Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) to a humiliating defeat in a 2007 upper house poll during his first term as premier.

The ensuing parliamentary deadlock allowed the opposition to block legislation and led to Abe's resignation two months later. That "twisted parliament" has hampered policies for most of the six years since and led to a string of revolving-door leaders.

"People wanted politics that can make decisions and an administration with a stable grounding, which led to today's result," LDP Vice President Masahiko Komura told public broadcaster NHK.

"'Abenomics' is proceeding smoothly and people want us to ensure the benefits reach them too. That feeling was strong."

Abe, 58, who returned to power after a big win in December's lower house poll for his LDP and coalition partner New Komeito, has said he will remain focused on fixing the economy with a mix of hyper-easy monetary policy, fiscal spending and a growth strategy including structural reforms. LDP leaders repeated that pledge on Sunday as the votes were being counted.

"What the public is demanding the most is to solidify the trend of economic recovery," said LDP Secretary-General Shigeru Ishiba.

But concerns have already surfaced that the size of the LDP-led bloc's victory will weaken Abe's resolve for economic reform in the face of opposition to deregulation from LDP lawmakers with close ties to industries that would suffer from change.

"So far, Abe's opponents were opposition parties. But from now on, he might find himself having to fight with people within his own party," said Tomoaki Iwai, a political science professor at Nihon University in Tokyo.

"It is too early to tell if he can maintain his leadership as he did so far."

Critics also worry Abe will shift focus to the conservative agenda that has long been central to his ideology, and concentrate on revising the post-war pacifist constitution and recasting Tokyo's wartime history with a less apologetic tone.

Such a shift, along with moves to strengthen Japan's defense posture, would further fray ties with China and South Korea, where bitter memories of Japan's past militarism run deep. Tokyo is already engaged in tense territorial rows with Beijing and Seoul over tiny, uninhabited islands.

"I have the impression that Prime Minister Abe wants to revise the constitution, though I don't think it will be easy," said apparel firm employee Etsuko Yamada, 35, who voted for the opposition Japanese Communist Party.

"I want him to show Japan's presence through diplomacy with strong negotiating power, not though military power by spending money to rearm."

OPPOSITION DRUBBING

Abe has declined to say whether as premier he will visit Tokyo's Yasukuni Shrine for war dead, where Japanese leaders convicted by an Allied tribunal as war criminals are also honored. A visit on the August 15 anniversary of Japan's defeat in World War Two would spark outrage in the region.

A Reuters poll showed Japanese firms generally wanted the LDP to win the election but they worry a landslide victory would allow Abe to prioritize nationalist policies over the economy, as critics say he did during his troubled 2006-2007 term.

Final results will be known late on Sunday or early on Monday.

Media exit polls showed the LDP and New Komeito would win more than 70 of the 121 seats up for grabs in the 242-seat upper house. With the coalition's uncontested 59 seats, that hands it a hefty majority, solidifying Abe's grip on power and raising the chances of a long-term Japanese leader for the first time since the reformist Koizumi's rare five-year term ended in 2006.

No election for either house of parliament need be held until 2016.

The exit polls showed, however, that the LDP fell short of winning an upper house majority in its own right for the first time since 1989, although it could put in a better performance than in 2001, when the party was led by the popular Koizumi.

The LDP and two smaller parties that back Abe's drive to revise Japan's pacifist constitution to legitimize the military looked to fall short of the two-thirds majority needed to take revisions of the charter to a public referendum, the exit polls showed. Those parties have two-thirds of the lower house seats.

Despite the LDP-led bloc's win, the party's pro-nuclear power stance is unpopular, and plans to restart reactors that have been off-line since the March 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster could run into trouble.

Abe will also have to decide whether to go ahead with an increase in a 5 percent sales tax to 8 percent next April, the first stage in a planned doubling of the levy to rein in Japan's massive public debt.

The main opposition Democratic Party of Japan, which surged to power in 2009 to end more than half a century of almost non-stop LDP rule only to be ousted last year, suffered its biggest drubbing since its founding in 1998. Exits polls showed the party winning 21 or fewer seats.

"Given that this government is getting a big mandate out of what seems to be a low turnout, it's not like there's a popular enthusiasm strongly behind Abe," said Kochi Nakano, a political science professor at Sophia University.

"It's sort of an empty victory that's exaggerated both by the electoral system and because of the low turnout, so we can talk about the crisis of Japanese democracy. It's unhealthy for any parliamentary democracy not to have opposition that would keep the government in check."

Many anti-LDP voters, faced with a fragmented opposition, cast their ballots for the Japanese Communist Party to vent their frustration.

Affiliate Niche Selection (Open Discussion) - ClickNewz!

Lynn Terry and Vera Raposo

Follow Along As We Discuss Choosing a GOOD Affiliate Niche...

I first met Vera Raposo online around 9 years ago, and I had the opportunity to hang out with her in person while I was in Vancouver a couple years ago. For as long as I've known her, she's been a serious entrepreneur type.

Vera has seen success both offline and online, and she's tried a number of internet business models such as buying/selling websites, advertising sales, selling information products, writing, coaching, affiliate marketing and more.

She's decided to make a shift, and focus ALL of her efforts on Affiliate Marketing, and she asked my advice on choosing an affiliate niche. We decided to have this conversation publicly so you could follow along. :D

"Out of everything that I have done, I really love affiliate marketing the best. I don?t have to create products, fulfill orders or manage clients."
-Vera

Like Vera, I've had my hand in a number of offline and online business models over the last 16+ years. From the beginning I integrated Affiliate Marketing into my business models (even offline), and it was the one thing that really stood out to me. It required the least investment, and the least work, for the highest return. Which is why I ultimately became a full-time affiliate.

That's not to say that being an affiliate doesn't require a serious investment of time and energy. But as Vera will agree, there is much more freedom & flexibility than with other business models. You don't have specific hours, your time isn't consumed with meetings and phone calls, you don't have to invest time/money upfront in creating or manufacturing products, etc.

It's also not limiting at all. You can always add products or services to your affiliate based business to better serve your market and dramatically increase your revenue. It's not required, but it IS an option - which is great!

Vera is changing to an all-affiliate business model for the purpose of "lifestyle design" - to earn more, stress less, and enjoy life.

Affiliate Marketing is "work" just like any other online model, but the affiliate niche you choose can make a HUGE difference in your quality of life.

There's GOOD money in Affiliate Marketing, but there are other great benefits too, which is why "choosing the right niche" is SO important!

"My plan is to start in a new market and hopefully something that will help me personally in my life. Do you personally see a difference in your income when it?s a topic that is actually helping you since you?re more emotionally invested in it?" -Vera

Definitely. I always advise people to choose a niche they're passionate about, or extremely interested in. Otherwise you'll find yourself bored, and your business (or blog) will suffer for it. As a rule of thumb, if you can't see yourself talking about the topic on a daily basis - with enthusiasm - it's not the right niche for you.

Here's the cool thing...

The affiliate niche you choose has the potential to take your life in the direction you most want. Let's say you have a fascination with RC Helicopters. It's an expensive hobby, but if you had the time and money you'd tinker with them all day long. You'd hang out with other RCH enthusiasts, attend RCH events all over the world, and basically spend most of your time building and flying and talking about them.

Fun, right? :D

So you create an affiliate blog all about holiday ornaments so you can earn enough money to live your "RC Helicopter" dream. Right? Wrong. :P

You create a blog about RC Helicopters! Even if it's just an interest, you can start a blog as an "enthusiast" (you don't have to be an expert) and share everything you learn along the way. Other people who are interested in getting started will really appreciate what you learn & share. Potential buyers love to hear from real people, not just merchants, and they're interested in your personal experience - because it helps THEM avoid wasting money, and make smart buying decisions.

Now that you've started your blog, you get to spend all of your free time doing exactly what you want to be doing. Even if you can't afford RC Helicopters in the beginning you can share cool videos, talk about upcoming events, let people know the best deals you've found online, and as you get set up in the hobby yourself you can share all the details with your readers.

Building up a strong readership will put you in a position to ultimately attract advertisers, potentially get free products to review, or a "press pass" to RCH events, etc. Now your blog is funding your hobby! Not to mention your "work" is FUN. And of course, done right, most of your "hobby expenses" are now tax deductible. :D

That's just one example. You have to find the right niche for YOU...

Brainstorming Exercise

* How would you spend your life, day in and day out, if time & money weren't an issue?

* What's the one thing you most wish you could do, but never seem to have enough time to get to it - or feel like you could never afford it?

* If you could pick something to get a free lifetime supply, because you WANT it (not because you need it), what would you choose?

* If you were given 10 hours a week and a bottomless bank account to start a new hobby, with the condition that a television crew would follow you for those 10 hours every week, which hobby would you pick?

Those are some great starting points for you to brainstorm the ideal niche for you. Grab a piece of paper and just jot down every idea that comes to mind. Even if they seem silly! You can research your ideas and narrow them down later, but start by considering everything.

NBA Summer League 2013: Bulls fall to Heat in playoffs

Another loss to the Heat in the playoffs, nothing to see here.

The dream of raising a championship banner in July has died in the Vegas sun: the SummerBulls struggled offensively throughout the night in their playoff opener against the Heat, eventually falling 68-62. It was the Bulls' first loss of Las Vegas Summer League, but it's one that drops them to the consolation bracket of the tournament. It appears as if Charles Boozer will have to wait another year to get that career-validating ring.

The SummerBulls' sorry offense could best be tied to the man who entered the game as Vegas' leading scorer: guard Andrew Goudelock. Goudelock torched defenses his first two games in LVSL, but turned in his second straight clunker on Thursday. Goudelock finished 2-for-14 from the field for four points. I accept full responsibility for jinxing him.

Any hope of Goudelock catching on with the big squad might be finished. K.C. Johnson reported the Bulls only want to keep 13 players, and still have interest in signing a veteran big man off the free agent scrap like Marcus Camby. The roster is at 13 right now if you count the unguaranteed deal of Malcolm Thomas, and truthfully, Thomas is probably a better fit at the end of the bench. Of course, the Bulls are allowed to keep 15 players if they choose, but luxury tax (what else?) concerns will likely make Goudelock a casualty.

On the positive side, Marquis Teague continues to play well. The now-second year guard ended the night with a team-high 21 points, shooting 5-of-11 from the floor and getting to the free throw line 10 times. He still had five turnovers, an issue that has been his lone black mark in an otherwise stellar LVSL performance, but it's comforting to know that Teague showed something in Vegas, regardless of the level of competition. He won't be slated to get many minutes when the season opens, but I have a sneaky feeling Hurt Kinrich (copyright: @rightfieldsucks) won't be able to stay on the floor the entire season. Teague should get a chance at some point this year, and hopefully he builds off a strong Summer League to the point where the Bulls will trust him as a full-time backup point guard a year from now.

Tony Snell struggled shooting the ball (2-of-8 from the field, 1-of-4 from three), but he finished with 12 rebounds and looked good defensively. He's so long and skinny and athletic. I didn't love or hate his selection at No. 20, but I've mostly liked what I've seen from him in Summer League. Don't expect much as a rookie, but there's no reason to doubt the Bulls can develop him into something useful.

I will admit: I like watching SummerBulls when the starters are the floor, and I thought it would be funny if they won the SummerChampionship. Alas. At this point, I'm pretty used to the Heat crushing hopes and dreams.

Daughter finds missing mom 52 years after she vanished

By Henry Austin, NBC News contributor

When Canadian police were told in 1965 that Alaska native Lucy Johnson has been missing for four years, investigators treated her disappearance as a murder.

Her husband Marvin was hauled in for questioning and officers excavated the backyard of the home they shared with their young daughter Linda in Surrey, British Columbia.

But more than five decades since her September 1961 disappearance, she has now been found alive in Yukon.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police?highlighted Johnson's cold case last month?and her now-adult daughter purchased ads in a newspaper in northern B.C.

"We received a phone call from a woman in the Yukon who called and claimed that she had seen the picture of the missing person in the free newspapers and said the missing person we were looking for was actually her mother,"??Cpl. Bert Paquet, spokesman for Surrey RCMP, told the?Canadian Broadcasting Company.?"The stars aligned, the timing was perfect."

Police confirmed that Lucy Johnson, who is now aged 77, has another family in Yukon.

Her husband died in the late 1990s. He was initially considered a suspect because he did not inform police that she was missing until May 14, 1965.

But when the backyard dig turned up no evidence, the case went cold for almost 52 years.

Hello Internet friends! It is Friday, and most of us have been sweating our butts off all week. It's like a million degrees in New York right now. And guess what? A year later, survivors recall Aurora shooting

AURORA, Colo. (AP) ? It is not a small club, the survivors of the shootings at Theater 9.

The Century 16 auditorium was packed ? 421 men, women and children who had turned out for a midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises." When a bizarre figure, helmeted and clad in black, appeared before them in a cloud of smoke, they reacted with bemusement and amazement, shock and confusion and ? finally ? horror.

Twelve people died, 70 were injured, and more than 300 fled into the night and into the arms of loved ones.

A year later, the survivors cannot forget their terror, or the injuries they suffered, or their losses. But they search for meaning, and sometimes find it: the victims whose faith has strengthened; the father who lost his son but found a cause; the couple who believe that the anniversary of a hateful act can be transformed by love.

___

Pierce O'Farrill was sitting a few rows up on the right side of the theater when he saw a tear gas canister fly in front of the movie screen, followed by the silhouette of the gunman and a green laser shining from the scope of one of his weapons.

"My heart just kind of stopped," O'Farrill said. "I can still in my head hear the (gunman's) footsteps. Everything went quiet for me."

A blast from a shotgun hit him in the chest and the left foot as he tried to take cover. Moments later, the gunman came closer and shot him with a .40-caliber pistol, shattering his left arm. The shot barely missed a nerve that controls hand function, doctors told him.

O'Farrill, 29, still has shotgun pellets in his chest and a bullet lodged in his arm. It aches when he exercises or when a storm is approaching.

Still, he said, as a devout Christian ? a worker for the Denver Rescue Mission ? he forgives the man charged in the shootings.

O'Farrill said he saw James Holmes for the first time in the hospital, on television news.

"When I saw him, I saw a lost soul," he said. "I saw a guy who was lost and the darkness got him.

"Everybody deserves a chance to be forgiven."

O'Farrill said he hopes Holmes, if convicted, spends the rest of his life in prison ? but that he would even like to meet him one day to see if he is remorseful.

"I would want him to know that there are people in this world that do not hate him," he said. "I want to tell him there is hope in this world, even in the darkest place where he is going to live the rest of his life."

That hope ? and a lot of counseling ? drive O'Farrill forward and make him stronger.

He has begun to play basketball and lift weights again, and now he has bigger goals on his horizon. O'Farrill got engaged July 2 and plans to get married sometime next year. Children, he hopes, will follow.

He feels incredibly lucky to be alive. "The last year's been a blessing," he said.

When word of the shootings spread, Tom Sullivan rushed to the staging area at the high school parking lot. His son Alex had gone to see the new Batman movie to celebrate his 27th birthday, two days before his first wedding anniversary.

When he learned that Alex was gone, Tom cried out and embraced his wife and daughter ? a moment captured in a photo that ran on dozens of newspaper front pages and websites.

Weeping in the parking lot, Sullivan realized he had no regrets about his relationship with his son. Each knew how much he was loved by the other. They went on guys-only Super Bowl trips to Las Vegas, celebrating craps wins with Jameson whiskey and cigars. When Alex turned 18 and wanted to get a tattoo, Tom got one too, even though he admitted the experience left him a little pale and sweaty.

"There were no unspoken words," said Sullivan.

He laughs easily when remembering his son. He's drawn comfort over the past year from talking about Alex, and the lesson he had learned: We must appreciate what we have.

He also has testified in favor of gun control laws at the state Capitol and went to the reopening of the Aurora movie theater, an event many other victims' families boycotted, including Alex's widow. His son loved going to the movies and the theater is part of the community ? a place where people come together, where kids can ride to on their bikes.

Sullivan has been back to the theater about a half dozen times, sometimes watching movies in the revamped auditorium where his son was killed. He sits in the seat and row where he believes Alex was sitting and leaves an empty seat for him.

It hasn't always been easy. Each Friday and the 20th of each month have been a reminder of loss. His wife Terry, a school bus driver, didn't want summer vacation to come even as the children around her grew more excited.

"Some days we're not moving forward, some days we're just making it through," he said.

July 20 has been a day Tom Sullivan has celebrated his whole life ? his mother's birthday, and then Alex's. This year, he'll probably participate in some of the public events marking the event, though he said he won't be going for his own sake. He wants to show people that he's OK ? and that they, too, can try to go back to normal life.

And he'll probably have some Jameson and cigars, to remember Alex.

As the sun rose over the beach at South Padre Island, on the last day of an April vacation, Eugene Han asked Kirstin Davis if she would be his wife ? and she said yes.

He followed with another idea: They should be married on July 20.

"It took me a second. I didn't understand where he was coming from," Davis said.

Their wedding would take place on the anniversary of the night when they and their friends went to the Century 16 theater. Davis and Han were just kids when they met at church in Aurora; they had been dating for two years. Now, they settled into the second row to watch the feature.

Han, sleepy from work, spotted someone entering through an exit door near the screen. He saw that two guns were strapped to the intruder's body, and he dropped from his seat and pulled Davis to the floor: "All I was thinking was, if anything, I could put myself between her and the bullets."

Both were injured ? Han seriously. He was shot at close range in his hip and leg. Davis had bullet fragments in her back. A friend also was shot in the leg, which had to be amputated.

Han spent five days at a hospital and the next three months bedridden, his parents and brother tending to him. A year later, his right leg is marked by purplish, coin-size scars.

Davis recovered from her wounds and started a job as a teaching assistant at an elementary school. Then came the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre in Newtown, Conn., which "sent me over the edge." She eventually quit her job. These days, she is sleeping better, but she fears big crowds.

Someday, the 22-year-old Davis sees herself once again working with children. Han, 21, wants to return to college, write a book ? and let the shooter know he forgives him.

Their wedding is scheduled for Saturday. Three friends who survived the Aurora shootings will take part; the idea is to make July 20 a happy day, at least for one couple.

"Someone has to be the first person to take the first step to make it a better day," Han said.

Marcus Weaver said he thinks God had a plan for him that night.

He was sitting in the fifth row next to his friend Rebecca Wingo when the shooting began ? "so loud, and you could see the white spray of the gun, and that's the image that is the one that is hard to get out of my head," he said.

Weaver was hit in the right shoulder by shotgun pellets. Wingo, a 32-year-old former Air Force linguist, was killed.

Weaver, 42, of Denver, described trying to grab his friend, and plunging through a horrific scene of bodies blocking the rows and aisles of the theater.

"In the 30 days after the shootings, every morning I got up and I prayed about it. And the Lord kept bringing people my way that would help," he said.

It was that faith, Weaver said, that helped him cope with the loss of Rebecca and to decide to forgive James Holmes, the man charged in the shootings.

"There's a lot of pain, a lot of hurt for him to execute something like that," he said. "And my whole thing was, if I carry that same hate and that same pain around for the rest of my life because of what he's done, then I'm going to be just like him. And my faith was telling me to just let it go."

Weaver also said that a few days after the shooting he read a passage in the Bible that explains how to be a light in the darkness.

"I thought, man, the darkness of the theater. How can I be a point of light?" he asked.

So Weaver began to speak to youth groups, students and prisoners about his story.

"It seemed the more I told it, the more it would help people," he said. "So I realized that God started using me as a point of light. ...

"Is God using me for a higher purpose? Absolutely."

Jerri Jackson tried to return to her job as a trucking company claims adjuster a few weeks after her son, Matthew McQuinn, was killed. But the pain was too much to bear. She has yet to return to work. Getting out of bed and out of the house to buy groceries is hard some days.

"I just don't want to be around people," Jackson said in a phone interview from her home in Springfield, Ohio.

McQuinn, 27, was sitting with his girlfriend, Samantha Yowler, in the first row of the second level of the theater's stadium seating when the firing began.

As Jackson tells it, McQuinn said "Ow, that hurts," before he jumped on Yowler to shield her from gunfire.

Yowler survived. McQuinn didn't.

Jackson remembers a conversation she had with her son, hours before the shooting. He talked about plans to move back to Ohio to work at a car parts factory near St. Paris; perhaps he would marry Yowler. He was homesick after struggling for a year to find full-time work in Colorado. Jackson offered to let him live with her to get started.

Then McQuinn said he had to go. He was going to the movies.

"I told him, 'Be careful,'" Jackson said. "He said, 'I know. ... I'll talk to you later, mom. I love you.' And that was it."

Now, she keeps close at hand the blanket in which she wrapped Matthew when he was a baby ? she found it in his apartment, among his things.

After he died, she bought a Mitsubishi Eclipse because her son had wanted one. "I tell people that the car belongs to my son, but I get to drive it," Jackson said.

Painted on the rear of the car is the legend, "Real Heroes Don't Wear Capes." And: "Matt McQuinn RIP."

And the letter "M'' ? Superman-style.
