6 Signs Your Cat May Be Sick

On August 9, 2012, in Pet Tips, by Stacy

We all know that our pets cannot talk to us and tell us when something is wrong. But cats tend to often try to hide when they are sick or hurt because they do not want to express vulnerability. Fortunately, there are a few telling signs that cat owners can pick up which will let them know that something may be wrong.

The following are six signs that your cat may be sick, adapted from an article by ReadersDigest.ca.

  1. Weight changes?- While weight gain may be a sign that your cat is eating more food or snacks than he needs, weight loss is one sign for concern.
  2. Unkempt coat ? Because you?re such a devoted pet owner, you?re likely to be in tune with your cat?s coat. If your cat has been shedding more than usual, it could be a sign that he is stressed. If his fur appears to be particularly clumpy and flaky, it means that he?s not keeping up with his grooming habits which is a sign he could be sick.
  3. Oral health ? Your cat?s mouth can be a good indicator of his health. Unusually bad breath can indicate a health condition as well as pale gums and ears which can indicate poor blood circulation.
  4. The eyes have it ? If you notice your cats? pupils appear dilated, even during daylight or if one is more dilated than the other, this could be a sign of illness.
  5. Shallow breathing - Short, shallow breathing is a sign that something isn?t right.
  6. Behavioral changes ? Other signs of sickness that are unrelated to your cat?s physiological symptoms are in his behavior. If your cat displays unusual behavior such as eliminating outside of the litter box, acting aggressive or irritable, or excessively ?crazy? then there may be an underlying issue.

Even though they can?t speak to us, our cats? bodies and behavior can reveal much about how they are feeling. If your cat is experiencing some of these symptoms and they persist, it is recommended to make a visit to your veterinary clinic.
