The Feng Shui of designing a new Home | Feng Shui Oracle

You are lucky if you have the opportunity to renovate or build a new house, as you can create a home that is really yours.

Making choices about your new home starts with what you want and not what Feng Shui says about what you are allowed to do. One approach to using Feng Shui when creating your ideal home, is simply to build it according to your needs and live there for six months. Then get your Feng Shui consultant to advise on whatever areas you feel need improving on.

However you can save a lot of time if you follow these Feng Shui guidelines.

First, you want to think about which rooms you want to receive the most sunlight. The shape of the house is an important factor here as it will determine the way sunlight strikes it. If the house is to be L ? shaped then part of it will be in shadow all day. The same is true for an extension as it might block light passing into a room you already use much of the time.

Another consideration is that buildings receive more sunlight along their longer sides, and if the longest sides face either east or west your home will be influenced by sunrise and sunset. The rooms on the sunrise side will good for focusing on activity and creativity, and those on the sunset side on romance and relaxation.

When adding an extension ask yourself if you really need one, as an extension can make the area of the house next to the extension unusable.

Whereas loft and basement conversions can end up not being used because the stairs leading to them have open steps. A basement will also need up-lighting to counteract the weight of the house pressing on it. And a converted loft will need up-lighting to compensate for the constricting effect of the sloping roof.

You can decide on where to place important rooms in the house by using the direction each room faces, as measured from the center of the house.

North: bedroom, chill out room, television room, storage.

North East: games room, play room, storage.

East: kitchen, study/office, dining room, children?s bedroom, bathroom, entrance hall.

South East: kitchen, study/office, living room, dining room, bedroom, bathroom, entrance hall.

South: living room, study/office, entrance hall

South West: living room hobby/d.i.y room.

West: bedroom, dining room, living room.

North West: study/office, dining room, parents bedroom, entrance hall.

The room you see first when walking through the front door will also have a big influence on you, as this is where you will spend much of your time.

If you see the kitchen not only will you practically live in there, but friends will visit you to eat your food. Whereas If you see a toilet or bathroom as you come in, you will end up spending too much time in there for all the wrong reasons.
